You read that right. 2 carat. Diamond. $40.
I’m talking about lab-grown diamonds, or as De Beers Co. wants you to call them, “synthetic diamonds.”
The thing is, these aren’t synthetic at all. They are 100% diamond material. The only difference is that they were grown in a lab instead of over thousands or millions of years in the Earth. You have to take them to a jeweler or lab to be able to tell the difference.
As you might have guessed, I got married recently, and Mr. Heartburn and I both agreed we wanted to elope – an inexpensive, intimate wedding. I did the proposing (another story for another time), and so we ordered our rings online together. His is a gorgeous titanium and tungsten number, and mind is (you guessed it!) a 2 carat round cut diamond.
So, I’ll be completely honest and tell you that the metal is shit. The setting was supposed to be white gold, but the white is already rubbing off. That being said, the ring itself is beautiful. I might eventually get it reset in another (nicer) metal. The stones themselves, however, are gorgeous.
I have a family heirloom diamond set in a necklace. I wanted to see if there were any visible differences between a “real” diamond and my lab-grown one. Not only do they appear (to my untrained eye) to be the same clarity and brightness, but the big one is sparklier. I mean, it is bigger, so maybe that’s why.
Suffice it to say, I discovered that you can have a huge rock for next to no money. Some people don’t like diamond alternatives or think they look cheap. I’m here to tell you, not ONE person believed me when I told them how much I paid. The most common response was, “Don’t tell anyone that! It looks exactly the same I thought it was a diamond.”
Many alternative diamond supporters will tell you to go with moissanite, which is what I thought I was going to get when I first started shopping. However, if I wanted the same size and setting in moissanite, I was looking at between $700-2000! That kind of money is just absurd to spend on something that you can so easily lose. In my opinion.
So, for any of you out there who are looking at tying the knot – there are ways to do it in style without breaking the bank! Lab-grown diamonds are the way to go!
